The Challenge

Over the last year I’ve found blogging wonderful as a motivator to be creative. However there’s a bit of a problem with it – there’s an awful lot of sitting – which leads to that syndrome – blogger’s bum. I’ve discovered that I’m the perfect weight – however only for someone 6' 3" tall. So as growing taller doesn’t seem to be an option I’m going to have to do something about the horizontal measurement instead.

Weight loss, exercise and dieting are all so unutterably boring that I’ve decided to approach the problem laterally with an art challenge.

So this is my challenge.

Walk a minimum of one mile from home. Record where you’ve been with a drawing, sculpture, photo or painting and then walk back. Every day for a year.
A mile may seem pitifully short but I chose a distance that would be bearable in the freezing cold or pouring rain and in any case it’s only a minimum distance.
If any one is interested in joining me I’ll add you to the ‘One mile from home’ blogroll.

So at the end of the year I’ll have 365 pieces of art, I’ll have explored where I live in an environmentally friendly way and as a bonus I might be nearer the right weight for a less Amazonian woman!

I think this is a wonderful idea.

You should publish a book of your illustrations and musings at the end of the year.

I'm going to tell the South China Morning Post's Technology News about this as they publish interesting things on the net.

I am SO with you on this! In fact, as soon as I finished reading your post, I put on my walking shoes and I was out the door. I walked to a fabric store and fondled cloth for a while, then bought some cotton I'm about to dye ... and make a bag! You've given me a kick start -- thanks Julie! Check my blog for daily updates!

Welcome to the walkers' club! I started walking a few years ago for the same reasons you are starting now. I have built up my distance to about 8 km each day for six days a week. Sometimes I use my three-wheeled bicycle so I can carry a lot of my painting gear with me. Then I go as many as 10 km one way, I stop at a good place to paint, set up my stuff, paint and jump back on my bike and go home exhausted and happy.

I like your sketches very much.

I've only just found this inspirational blog - well done, Julie. I am physically-challenged with MS. Even taking my mobility scooter out every single day is not an option. But I could perhaps do it more than I do. I am so glad you are enjoying your art and your surroundings in such a creative way.
